About the project
The story behind Voices of Dissent: a living archive of sound, solidarity, and resistance.
The Origin
Voices of Dissent is a living archive of resistance, memory, and movement. Led by over two dozen St. Louis-based artists, the project brings together original music, poetry, visual art, and storytelling created in response to the devastation in Gaza—and in solidarity with the long-standing struggles for justice in Ferguson and beyond.
This work began not in a studio, but in a moment of shared grief. What followed was a vision: to create something beautiful, powerful, and urgent—an offering of solidarity through sound.
Today, Voices of Dissent is a 20-track collection of original songs, videos, and visuals shaped by real events, community testimony, and the deep connections between art and advocacy.
The Collection
We believe that art can do more than express emotion—it can expose systems, mobilize communities, and build power. In a world where suffering is too often reduced to numbers or buried in reports, Voices of Dissent turns truth into something that can be heard, seen, and felt.
This is data visualization through art—transforming research, memory, and lived experience into sound, imagery, and story.
Instead of charts and graphs, we use harmonies and hooks, textures and tones, movement and metaphor. The result is not just documentation, but activation. A way to make visible what is too often erased.
It is music as testimony.
Storytelling as resistance.
Art as public record.
The collection includes genre-spanning music, video, poetry, and original visual art from both emerging and established St. Louis artists. Every contribution is grounded in lived experience—holding space for grief and rage, but also for joy, resilience, and the radical act of remembering together.
The Strategy
Voices of Dissent is more than a cultural offering—it’s a strategy for movement-building. Through mentorship, studio access, and cross-discipline collaboration, the project creates pathways for artists to become advocates. We are cultivating a creative force rooted in liberation—not just documenting this moment in time, but helping to shape what comes next.
We don’t just resist with policy and protest.
We resist with sound.
With story.
With each other.
The Future
This is not just a soundtrack.
It’s a strategy.
This is not just memory.
It’s movement.
This is not just a project.
It’s a living archive of our collective refusal to be silent.
Voices of Dissent will continue to grow through future performances, community events, educational collaborations, and mutual aid partnerships. This is just the beginning.
